Money
Pocket Money was 1/- a week (1 Shilling) I think issued after lunch on Saturdays.
Credit money was money that may have been given by parents for any emergencies. You could apply for credit money for reasons like Mothers day gift or Grandma's birthday, but not comics, airfix kits, or toys. It was suprising how many grandmothers people had!
3d Threepence would buy you a cream bun from the tuck shop.
On the way to school was Mrs Crummies the sweet shop. Not sure if she ever made a profit as a lot of lollies were slipped into the pocket. Regulars (The boarders) took a dim view of this would tell the offenders that this was one lady you did not steal from! The same with the sweet shop near the playing fields.
Fines
Fines were imposed on untidy boys at the rate of 1d (a penny) - That's if you left your books out or you had an untidy locker etc. This fine system was policed by the senior boys who in turn used the money to buy records. If there was a hit that all liked then watch out!
Washing Up
Washing up for 25 boys and staff was done on a rotation basis - a pair of boys would be paid the immense sum of 2/- for the week. Two sinks and 28 small plates, large plates, knives, forks, spoons, 3 milk jugs etc. There was a record continually being broken on how long it took. 11 minutes comes to mind.
